Of all the Whitetail Buck shots I've taken, this is my wife's favorite. She always asks why I haven't posted it and I tell her the background is busy and parts of it are too bright,it's not technically all that good and she just says "Yeah, but I like it!". Well, I like it too so here it is.

I spotted this fellow heading back into the woods early in the morning so I got ahead of him and set up in one of the few gaps I had with some dappled morning light shining throught the trees. He was kind enough to travel the path I predicted, paused a moment and looked right at me. I got one shot.

Sigma 120-300mm

Comments...well they probably won't be good but give them to me anyway.

The spotlight effect and the raised leg compensate for the busy BG. My wife's favorite buck is green and has a picture of Ben Franklin on it :P

I really like this, too. It looks like you kept the sunny background under control and it really sets off the head/rack of this nice buck. The soft light on the buck, and his posture add a couple other elements to the photo. A neat looking rack on this guy. From this angle, the main beams look like they go straight up.

I like the photograph. I think you did an excellent job of keeping the background from getting blown out.

If I have any complaints it might be that it looks a tad bit oversharpened on my monitor and I would wish for a crop that wasn't quite so centered. I think some Photoshop work could go a long way to tone down that background and bring the focus back to the buck.

Overall though I think it is a nice shot and you did well to predict the animal's behaviour.

I, like your wife, love that sweet face. My preference would be to burn down the light BG. Nice pose.

Great job of anticipation and setting up for that spot of light Mike. That's what really makes the image successful IMO. Plus the raised leg and the pose and the interesting antlers. Good one for sure.

The vegetation doesn't really bother me- typical habitat. Toning down the BG would help the image.

I really like the spotlight effect that light has created. :D I don't mind the vegetation either but the background is a little more distracting.

All nits covered Mike, the BG is the only real problem IMHO - just a little too bright. 8) :D

I think you self critique is pretty good. The spot light effect and the raised leg are nice. Interesting antler growth on this guy.

I very much like the pose and how you caught it in the light. Toning down the BG would make it even stronger.
