A group of elk feeding at first light in the fresh snow fallen on the 20th of October close to Banff in Canada. Two days later, most of the snow was gone again and you could walk outside in just a T-shirt. The wildlife was definitely already preparing for winter though. The elk had to eat as much as they could before permanent snow falls, which makes finding food a lot harder. Especially the males need to regain their strength in this period, because the rutting season is only just over. They have been busy herding their group and chasing off other males without hardly taking the time to eat. If they would not get some fat on them before the snow, their chance to get through winter is slim. Even now though, the male is keeping a watchful eye on the surroundings for wolves and other danger.

I think that this is a really great shot.

I love that the shot includes a group of elk instead of just a single one. I also love the contrast between the colours of the Elk and the fresh snow. Almost has the look of a greeting card.

This is a great group shot. The snow and the trees in the background make a nice scene. Great shot. :D

Very nice Authur. :) Having heads down usually doens't work too well, but with a clear guardian, it shows the benefit of living in a herd. Nice looking bull too- looks like he passed on a few genes if that's his harem.

I'm seeing the blues too.

I love the snowy setting here and the line of elk is framed perfectly by the snow in the meadow, just below the forest edge. Moody shot. Same thing just happened to our beautiful winter conditions today (although it's not shirt-sleeve weather). Our beautiful snow has just turned to a rainy/slushy mess.

Wow Milo, that sounds as if it may not be a very usual thing in Alaska at this time of year. I've recently started a thread in the "Environment, Conservation and Ethics" forum on this site about changing weather patterns to get an idea of how the situation is changing around the globe.

I took a quick look at your website and read some of your stories (read about the killing of the bear for photos before... so damned sad!). I think your galleries of photos of "humans and wildlife" are great! You are doing a wonderful job as a photographer and I bet as a biologist too! Any chance we could change positions? What you're doing is roughly what I took up biology for . Oh well, this project I'm working on is great too... I only have to find a way to finance the next phase, which will not be too easy I'm afraid :| . Where there's a will there's a way though.

Cheers!

Arthur, thanks for the kind words... heck lets switch jobs for a year! About our weather, although Alaska is definitely warming up, this is not all that unusual for COASTAL Alaska. Since we are right on the coast, our weather stays very mild, and generally switches from rain to snow and back again all winter long. Just over the Chugach Mountains from here is another story... COOOOOOLD. Also, Valdez which is less than 50 miles away, stays just a few degrees colder and gets tons of snow.
