Here is a slightly different take on the Bull Elk crossing the Madison River that Jerry Gowins posted recently. On this morning, we were standing about twenty-five feet to the right of Jerry as the elk entered the river, driving his harem across before him. Jerry was along the bank (along with some others) so his image was taken looking almost due downstream. The fog was thick enough that the AF was cutting in and out. I was far enough away from the bank that I could include some of the golden brown of the meadow in the image, to inject a little color into a quite pastel image. In post-processing this, I enahnced the color saturation of the grass slightly, to give it a zone-like appearance, clearly separated from the water and BG, which tended to merge into one monochrome as the fog thickened. I tried to replicate the color of the grass as my eye perceived it at the time, since it was close enough that it was not obscured by the fog. I also note that the elk is slightly less oblique in my image although I'm positve Jerry and I took our images within seconds of each other. Comments welcome.

Technicals: Nikon D70 + 500mm, f4.5, 1/400, +2/3. tropod + gimbal

love the mist and the rack, not much for centered images thought I do see the rippled water and agree it adds to the pic

The fog is really nice. I'd be tempted to take a little more off the bottom but I do like the grass. Nice shot. :)

Very moody shot. I would consider a top and bottom crop to make a pano. Thanks for sharing.

This bull certainly made a great subject in the fog David. Nice shot and I agree on a pano crop already suggested. 8) :D

Its always great to catch animals in the fog. Good job getting a sharp focus. I like the band of grass also but would agree a pano would look better. A nice shot! :)

Sorry I missed this op! I love these foggy animal images. I also would go for the pano crop.
