Here is a large handsome male lion lapping up some water, photographed at Savuti in October. There were only two waterholes in this park with October temperatures reaching 122 F during the day. This fact clearly swung the hunting advantage to the lion pride over the prey.

Canon 1DMkII, Canon 400/2.8 + 2.0 TC II on a beanbag. ISO 400, 1/800 @ f/11. Ambient light (the setting sun), full frame. All comments appreciated.

I think it is a good behaviour shot. The light and colours and bright eyes are awesome.

My one small complaint is that the little pink tongue makes the lion look like a pussycat instead of a King.

Nice action and sweet light! Would love to see the entire reflection because the water looks nice! Would also like to see it with more room on both sides! Tack sharp! Good job!

Great light! I love that big tongue- looks like he's going to lap up all that water in not time flat. Good exposure- even the bright spots on the back leg have details.

A bit tight, especially with the tail, but that's small potatoes in this very nice dish. 8)

Wonderful light and I like the behaviour. :) Would also like a little more room on the sides.

Did he just eat a whole Buffalo, Joe? he looks about to burst!

My only nit is the tightness, a little more room all around would be nice, but a very nice capture of mid-lap at the water hole in that sweet late day sunlight. 8) :D

Really cool shot - just a tiny bit tight in the frame.

I like the pink tonque ... gives the image a different colour to focus on. The pose is just great! :)

The minor only nit I have is the extra half inch of room I wish was on the each side ... left for the shadow, and right for the tail. Although I realize this was probably really tough to get in the field. I mean, who thinks about moving the Jeep backwards 3 feet when you're seeing this? C'est la vie.
