Elk - Jasper National Park, Alberta
EOS 1D, 70-200mm

Repost of an old shot for the motif. This was pretty scary because I lost track of my distance to the animals. I didn't figure it out until I couldn't get wider with the 70-200mm lens. This shot is full frame taken at 70mm. Definitely learned a scary lesson that day.

Very nice comp! But as you said, at 70mm this looks certainly too close!

Wow, FF & 70mm! Didn't read the little pamphlets the parks office hands out, eh? Amazing how easy it is to lose track of distance when looking through the view finder. Would have been nice to have the shot taken just a few feet further back obviously, but the colours and the look in their eyes is really sweet here.

John, These were not young guys just practicing. They seemed more like good buddies deciding to "just get it on". It was very exciting not 10 feet off the side of the road. I shot about 30 pics in the three minute row. EJ, on the other hand--well, he just got his 8fps shooting 1D...

A great encounter.

Oh, I was on the other side of the street like any sensible person would be.
