Edit/Update - ID from David
Carolina Satyr
_____

I went through the two sites that I look at, and an old butterfly book that dates back to the 1400's, and still did not see one anywhere with a side view like this one.
Going on memory, (and we know how that goes sometimes - ), I thought that this was some type of Hairstreak.
Or, ................. what the heck is it?
Image
Took this outside and beside the screen porch. You can barely see the screen in the background. I thought I had eliminated it!

Thanks again gang!

Thanks guys!

Yeah David, man I have a tough time trying to remember these small ones.
I can go outside and see a dozen different small types of butterflies or moths and not have a clue.
Now the Monarch butterfly and a couple of other large ones I know!  (Those real easy ones!)

Nice shot. I'd say definitely some type of satyr, perhaps Carolina -- Tom will probably know!

Excellent comp- I think David is right on the ID. Not a butterfly I know from my area, but it looks like the one in the book!

Hi Michael
I guess you guys have settled the ID question which is just as well because I certainly would not have the foggiest. Regarding the image, well it’s really rather a fine one; personally I like the background because it adds a nice spot light effect to the overall shot that I find rather pleasing. The composition just works very well having a nice balance between subject and negative space and this all adds up to one great shot in my book.

Thanks for sharing
Matthew

I'm not a specialist when it comes to ID'ing American butterflys but I can tell a nice shot from a lousy one!

Hey Michael,

Excellent shot, but I wouldn't expect anything but excellence when viewing your images. 8)
