finally i got me a shot of the male anax imperator, the one that is constantly garding our gardenpond as his territory; he keeps circling round for hours and only makes very short stops to perch and rest;
Canon 10D, 100-400 mm , at 400 mm; with some backlighting shining through the reeds;

Gorgeous shot. Looks like the wing tips are a bit soft. Some added USM at the wing tips might help.
Thanks for posting,

Nice capture- I know how hard it is to catch these at rest! The background works because of the regular pattern of lines- front lighting might be better, nice as is.

Very nice. Love the light. I don't mind the background at all.

Hi Herman
A fine and enjoyable image that has great appeal. Regarding the background, well personally I love it; perhaps with the exception of the circular highlight. I think the backlighting of the reeds really makes this shot stand out and centres the eye to the subject. I am glad that your persistence paid off and you managed to capture the subject you were after, and thanks for sharing.

Regards
Matthew

Very nice, Herman :!:

BTW: Would you have a dragonfly field guide to recommend? I know nothing about them, except that they are beautiful creatures.
