This is where it all started...
I followed the subject in front of the sun, behind the sun, turning, and going the other way. Colors greatly varied for each point and focal length.

Very nice with the sun and the boat positioned perfectly in the frame. I think that this might lend itself to being a horizontal which would complement the horizontal water line and also add more direction to the way the boat is going.

I agree that a horizontal format would seem to work better, but then you'd lose that lovely blue sky and cloud. Maybe 2 or 3 photos stitched together next time. The colors are marvelous.
