Close-up of a pickling variety cucumber surface carefully picked from my garden. Most cucumbers varieties with skin bumps have these protective spines but they are easily dislodged by handling and processing so are almost never present by the time they are sold or packaged. It is wise to be wearing gloves when picking!
This was taken near the stem end where the skin is the usual green but also has a yellow must. Len Romanick
