This was just taken a couple of weeks ago in Alaska's Katmai National Park. I haven't had much time to sort through all my images yet, but this one is an early favorite from what I've seen so far of my shots - so I'm posting it for this week's motif.

I love these type of moody, half-hidden, kind of face shots. I always look for chances to get these type of images, but those opportunities come along very rarely it seems ... and this is why I think this will probably be one of my favorite images from our trip to Katmai this year.

20D, 400mm, 1/250, f/8.0, ISO 200

Critiques welcome!

The precise framing works very well with the shadow away from the eyes !! This is different from most posted and I like the out of the box thinking !!!

Might consider taking a bit of the top ? The main point is the bears face and there is not much going on at the top !!! Congratulations !!!! 8) 8)

Always great to see a different take on the usual bear images and I love the look on this one's face as it peeks around the tree Pete! I can see why this is a favourite shot! 8) :D

Very nice!

I too really like these types of "hiding" images.

The shadow on the bears face really draws you to the eyes.

Congrats. on a fine image.

Cool shot Pete! I'm a fan of the peek-a-boo type shots too.

Looks like one of those miserable sunny days with bright light....

A vertical might have worked better- but you may not have had time.

Very nice peek-a-boo pose. I would consider emphasizing this by cropping tighter.

Cheryl & Al: I give the tighter crop a try before I print out an 8x10 of this photo. It does seem to 'pop' it up when I tried it on the monitor.

Tim: I had to hold two thumbs up for this photo. Didn't even think about vertical as she came around the bend ... although I suppose I could have, because I did have time to set up as the bear worked her way up the shoreline. I've gotten into a bad habit of never really shooting vertical (or thinking vertically) - something I'll work on this winter with the birds around my house.

Thanks all!
