A couple of weeks ago in Yellowstone near Tower Falls park visitors and photographers were treated to a rare site. This mountain lion rested on a cliff for the entire day. Lorri and I we're on scene from 11:00am to 8:15pm. The lion was across the canyon of the Yellowstone River, a long distance away. I triied every combination of lens and converter, f stop shutter speed ISO I could think of. I wasn't expecting much since we were shooting through so much atmosphere. I was astounded at the results. I've printed this 13x19 with stunning results. We had every type of light from full sun to overcast to late evening shadow. Here I used the overcast light to control the contrast.

Canon Eos1d2, EF600mmF4IS with 2x converter, Gitzo & Foba, ISO 400, 1/50th @ F11, raw converted in RSE

Robert, its so great to capture these animals in the wild. For the conditions (distance), this is a really nice pose of the lion. I missed this event by two days!

You may be familiar with The Cougar Fund, which I am a charter board member of along with Tom Mangelsen. Protecting these magnificent cats from over hunting and orphaning of kittens is a major goal.

I suspect this is the first picture of a wild cougar that I've ever seen.

And it's a great one!

Wow! Way to capitalize on a rare opportunity. Effective 1560mm at 1/50th! Way to go!

This one image is worth all the game farm images combined! What a great experience. The only wild one I've seen was in Glacier where it bounded across the road in front of us in about 3 seconds!

It must be an amazing moment!

The pose is close to the one in the picture that David Jernigan posted a few weeks ago.

Looks a little oversharpened to me.
