When I was cleaning my mother's yard a couple weeks ago from Frances's wrath, I saw several halves of oranges cleaned all the way to the peel. Figured one of these guys must've been feasting. He showed up soon enough, and I caught him in the act.

This is Raw out of the camera. What can you do with it? Beside making an avatar of it, of course.

Not a massive change, but an improvement?

Levels, Contrast added with usm, usm, and a bit of saturation

All it really needs IMO is a slight levels adjustment, some warming and some USM. The eye appears to be outside the critical point of focus so that required a tad more (selective) sharpening than the rest.

I like them both. Thanks, Gary and Greg. I agree that I just missed the focus of the eye. :( Your idea of selective sharpening, tho, gives me a further idea of keeping the BG out of the sharpening and instead giving that some blur. That's something I've never tried and need to add to my bag of tools.

I like Greg' better - mine is a bit "neon" in comparison - it was fun trying though!

Hey Gary, I went with a more "neon" version for my avatar so it would pop more in the small space. (Also, zI don't have to worry about the focus so much at 50 pixels.) Greg's focus comment made me think about why I missed the focus and I realized I'd focused on his eye when his head was in the orange. When he lifted it for a much better pose, he came forward a little, too. Always plenty of mistakes to learn from!

What a great improvement on the BG!! I agree with Gary that Greg's color seems most true to life though I really like the warmth that your version gives to the squirrel's coat.
