Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the price?

Each workshop is different. Some are all inclusive which includes lodging, meals and/or transportation; others may not include certain things. For details on what is included in each workshop please refer to each workshop page in the current schedule.

What about instruction and activities?

While each workshop location is different in terms of what the activities are, whether we are flying in helicopters in Hawaii, or exploring St. Paul Island by vehicle, all workshops will include a mix of in-the-field instruction as well as some formal classroom, teaching and critique sessions and in-depth discussions on the ins and outs of nature photography.

How large are your group sizes?

All of our groups are kept small so a high level of personalized instruction is available for all skill levels. In general there are no more than 8 attendees per instructor. This allows us to focus on your individual needs, minimize our impact on the areas we visit and maximize the photographic opportunities. The end result is a better value for your money and time and a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

What is your cancellation/refund/payment policy?

Cancellations can be made up to 90 days prior to the workshop date, however you forfeit your deposit unless we cancel the workshop, in which case you will receive a full refund. Cancellations made after 90 days prior to the workshop date are not eligible for refunds. We have the right to cancel any workshop for lack of registrants up to 90 days prior to the workshop date. While many workshops will run with just a single registrant, other may require a minimum registration. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Paypal are accepted for deposit payments. Should you wish to pay the final payment amount by credit card or PayPal, a 3% convenience fee will be added to the remaining balance. We do accept wire transfers and checks.

Do you offer equipment rentals?

Depending on availability, participants may rent photography equipment from us for their use during a workshop on a first-come-first-served basis. Selection is limited. Please inquire for availability and pricing. We can also refer participants to reputable photo equipment rental companies.

Deposits are required to reserve your spot in a workshop. Amounts are specified on each workshop page. Unless otherwise specified, deposits are non-refundable—unless we cancel the workshop.

What about travel insurance?

There are many companies that offer travel insurance and we highly recommend considering purchasing travel insurance, especially for more expensive international trips.

What is your smoking policy?

We do not permit smoking within vicinity of the instructor or other non-smoking participants, either in the field or during indoor class sessions. At lodges and after hours smoking may be permitted in certain designated areas. Check with us if you smoke. We also do not have any instructors who smoke.

Being in Amboseli National Park, Kenya with Piper Mackay was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. She knows the area, the behavior of the animals and is a pro at directing the driver to get in position for that perfect head-on shot. I came home with priceless images and memories!

The Best of Kenya, Africa
The photography opportunities were excellent. I loved the trip and will be back for more.

Hummingbirds and Toucans - Costa Rica
I have attended MANY workshops over the years, but no experience even begins to compare with the incredible Tanzania trip that we just experienced. In addition to learning more about life and more about photography, Dik and I had the time of our lives! We are huge Greg Downing fans! This was my fourth Greg workshop, but definitely not my last!

Ultimate Africa Experience - Tanzania
I could not have picked a better leader for my very first photography workshop. Greg Downing is personable and knowledgeable. He not only is able to teach and answer questions, but he also can explain why and where the answers came from. This workshop has set my expectation bar high for any future workshops I may attend. Greg, Thank you.

West Coast Rookeries by Boat - Sarasota, Florida
Nikhil is a great person in general and in my eyes a very good instructor. In the field he made sure to work with each individual on whatever settings or techniques they were having issues with but also didn't give a lot more time to any one person. His critiques were done to honestly better our work and not to find fault.

Springtime at Chincoteague Island - Virginia
I especially enjoyed the shoots, of course the loons, but also the opportunity to see and photograph birds I don't normally see: Ruddy Duck, Red-Naped Sapsucker, Mountain Bluebird, Stellar Jay, and Evening Grosbeak. Greg and Alan, you do a superb job of teaching—not just getting us to a shooting position, but teaching as we go. Thank you.
