iPad 3 Screen Disappoints!

Well the 4x resolution is nice but the colors are awful in comparison to earlier models. The iPad and iPad 2 had a screen that was nearly perfectly calibrated. The iPad 3 screen has an ugly yellow cast. Pictures may be higher resolution but the color is nowhere near as good. I first read about a "slight warming" of the palette in MacWorld but they aren't critical photographers. I find the color rendition when placed next to the old screen ugly!

It is also significantly dimmer for the same brightness setting.

It is noticeably heavier and thicker

Agree on the lousy color...very disappointed in the unit I received today. Color on my 'original' iPad is much better.

I have read it is the glue used & it will/should cure in a week or so?
I hope so as my New 3 has a noticeable yellow "warmer" tint compared to my Original ipad 1.

While it is a tad heavier it is not noticeably thicker in the least.

This below from Mac forums:

E.J. thats strange. I put the iPad 2 side by with the new iPad and brightness is the same for mine. I also compared the same image on the iPad 2, new iPad and my NEC PA271 calibrated display. The new iPad image is significantly closer to the way the image is displayed in the NEC. In fact, its the iPad 2 that has the ugly red color cast. This is even more apparent when viewing a B&W image.

I do find the new iPad noticeably heavier even though the specs say its only an additional 0.1lbs.

Aravind, maybe your iPad has cured I'm hoping that with time it gets better but mine is significantly dimmer for the same position on the brightness slider.

It is thicker according to Apple's own specs and with them in my hands side by side, it sure feels thicker to me.

You are probably aware that Data Color has an app for the iPad that allows the Spyder to color calibrate the iPad screen.

I used it on my iPad 2 and it worked easily and produced truer colors.

That only helps if you have a Spyder. I'm certainly not going to buy a color calibration package just for the iPad.
After a day of use now, the color is just really objectionable. Not just in photos but games and lots of other things. It's akin to taking the Photoshop Saturation slider up to about 60. Everything looks awful. Very disappointing. I can't imagine this getting better over time.

I think you have a bad iPad E.J. We got a pair at work yesterday and the displays on both are exception. The color is definitely much more accurate and contrast ratio better. On the original iPad and iPad 2 I would be very hesitant to show my portfolio with it, I have no such hesitation now with the new iPad. I would suggest trying to replace yours at an Apple store or see if you can borrow another one from someone else.

From all the IPad II's i've tried, they seem great for having the "calibrated look"

I've had mine only for a day, but I find the colors to match my calibrated display more closely than the original iPad and iPad 2. I have not seen a yellow color cast you describe.

I have now received dozens of emails, PM's and other communiques from photographers all around the world whose experience matches mine. So I don't think that I have a "bad" unit. Some people love oversaturated unnaturally warm images

From what I have read there are several suppliers of each of the iPad components. It's possible that the displays from one of the suppliers have the yellow cast E.J. is seeing.

My new IPAD does not have the yellow cast. It seems that some have the problem and others don't, lots of threads on the web of people getting the yellow cast, taking it back to the store and exchanging it for one that does not have the yellow cast. So I don't think it is that some people just can't tell the difference.

How do they go about changing it for a non-yellow screen? Will Apple let them open 10 boxes until they find a screen they like? Just curious.


My iPAD 3 is on the right. The whites are not blown out on the 3 as it looks in the image but the color cast is
accurate.

The folks that reported that they did an exchange of yellow cast displays did not not seem to have to check very many out to find one that did not have the yellow cast. Just said they took it back, exchanged it for another one, it checked out good and they went on their way.

Well after spending the last 2 days with my IPad 3, I can honestly say I do not see a color cast in mine. I do not doubt that EJ's has an issue, but i've looked at games, images, web pages, etc and have not noticed a warm yellow cast in anything. Perhaps as someone said earlier, that there are production runs that contain screens with issues... I hope you are able to get it resolved to your satisfaction EJ.

C. David Tobie of Datacolor has not reported any particular issue after some detailed looking into his "new iPad"; quite the opposite. While I haven't been a fan of the Spyder line of products, there's no question that Tobie knows what he's about, and his report is that the new iPad's screen is the best by far of all the iOS devices to date, in terms of stock color gamut and accuracy of the RGB primary colors vis-a-vis sRGB.

It's worth noting that despite his generally positive comments, Tobie says that yellows look significantly different on the new device. However he doesn't frame it as a severe problem; if it was really objectionable I think he would say so. From the description of the people who have looked at several tablets and found the yellow cast on some but not others, it does sound like there's a bad run of panels coming out. Shades of the 27" iMac yellow cast issue?

My personal advice: Anybody getting a yellow cast or other immediately noticeable display problems with the "new iPad" should return or exchange their unit ASAP. IMO it's not normal, and not something to either expect or tolerate of this device.
