Canon 20D, 400mm f/4 DO lens with 1.4x Extender = 560mm, 1/250, f/8.0, ISO 400.

I've attached the unedited image as well. Critique away please! I curious to see if my workflow & eye towards colour is way off from what others might think. 8) RE-POSTS entirely accepted and encouraged!

In EOSViewUtility, I chose "Daylight" as the white balance adjustment. No other adjustments were done in the RAW to 8-bit TIF file conversion. Once I did the adjustments described below, I saved the above image for the web at 120k.

In Photoshop Elements 3.0:
1. Cropped as shown
2. Lighten shadows +20%, darken hightlights +10%, midtone contrast +10%
3. Brightness was adjusted by +3
4. In Levels, I adjusted the Red to .97
5. Sized image to 646x513 pixels
6. USM at 250%, 0.5, 0.

The only adjustment done to the raw file (shown below) is in the EOSViewerUtility program ... by choosing "Daylight" as the white balance. The size shown here is the full image, with no sharpening.

Pete,

As is typical of any digital image, it is flat out of the camera, and adjustments are of course needed to really make it shine. Great image, and good post-processing work. The "Don't modify the image except to crop out of camera" discussion is a crock imho, as photographers have been using the darkroom for decades and doing all sorts of dodging/burning/etc. Can we say VELVIA for saturated colors? Anyways i'll get off my soapbox and just say it is a lovely image and your post-processing work was well done.

Nice job to catch the bears standing up Pete. The autumn colors look good too. :)

A bit more room on the bottom would be nice for the virtual legs of the bear on the right.

I use a more subtle USM application. For a web size image I typically use 125, .2 and 0 with three, maybe four applications to sharpen the image. This looks slightly over shaprened to me.

Very nice shot Pete! I love the composition, the pose of the subjects and the complementary setting. The colour looks great on my monitor. 8) :D

I love the image as is. I did try selecting the background and sharpening a bit. Not sure if it's better though.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

Chris ... I hear ya! However, that 'critiques' thread was kind of interesting, and I thought I'd give it a try. I don't see how this kind of post would be very practical on this forum though. Probably my last attempt at this comparison stuff.

Tim ... I left everything on the bottom when I printed this image as an 10x8. But, forgot about the virtual feet when preparing this post and I ended up knocking off just a tad. Dang! I'll try your sharpening technique the next few posts I do. Thanks!

Rob ... pretty hard to really tell much difference when looking just at my screen. I tried printing them, but again ... not much difference. Thanks for the input though! I appreciate it.

Great shot and nice composition. I think I'd be tempted to crop a bit off the top, but nice as is!
