A couple of years ago I was hiking in Denali National Park and stopped for lunch. Of course potential photo opportunities played into which patch of tundra I would use as a lunch room. I selected an area with numerous arctic ground squirrel holes, hoping to spot one. So I set up the camera and 500mm lens + 1.4 TC. Shortly thereafter I saw a flash of something off to my right. I looked closely, but saw nothing. About the time my attention span was waning, this little guy popped up.

Weasels are incredibly high energy. I had a real challenge to spot him when he emerged from behind a rock in the nearby boulder field, then find him in the viewfinder and finally get the lens focused. Even with autofocus, he disappeared from the view finder several times just as he came into focus.

But, luck was with me, I did get 5 reasonably good shots, of which this is one. No, the composition is not the best, I wish it was looking into the frame. But its a whole lot better than nothing and it brings back a wonderful memory of a fleeting creature that joined me ever so briefly for lunch. :)

sometimes, the smaller they are the more active and not always easy to focus. We've got some in belgium but they are very shy and much more difficult to spot. Nice shot Tim with good DOF. Everytime I see your images I dream of alaska: Katmai, Denali,...What a wonderful nature :D

Hi Tim,

lovely shot with nice side light. Actually I don't mind it not looking into the frame. It shows the animal in peace, without stress in its own enviroment. Really nice.

If this is FF I'd consider turning this into a square representation.

Cheers

Peter

Such smart and wonderful little creatures Tim! Getting one to sit still for a nano-second is quite an achievement! Over here they are like greased lightning!

Beautiful shot in gorgeous light. I love everything about this one - perfect for the motif!! :) 8) :D

Sweet shot Tim. Way to be persistent in trying to capture even a few fleeting images. It certainly is not easy with these little critters. Thanks for sharing.

I think it's great as-is, Tim!

Weasels are too cool! I've only ever seen two of the smaller weasels ever. (And one of those, I only saw as it ran under the wheel of my car. ) Heck, I've only ever seen members of the larger species (otter, fisher, marten) four or five times. To get a shot as good as this is something I can only dream of (so far).
