In 2 weeks we travel to Iceland for a quick week sans offsrping. :) My 24-105 has died and I am thinking it is time, have thought about it a while, to get the 2.8 lens I know I will use. Especially as in Iceland I would like that 2.8 for the wide angle stars. Now considering the price differences is the Tamron any good, especially at the wide end wide open? I have read quite a few "reviews" and again QC seems to be all over the place with Tamron but a good one is very good it seems?

I might check out the new Sigma 24-105, it has good reviews. But if you can swing it, I'd opt for the 24-70 2.8 II. I picked one up not too long ago and it is an amazing lens! Oh, and have an awesome trip!
Life is short - shoot good glass!

I already have the 24-105 from Canon which will get fixed sometime, but I do need a 2.8 lens and the Canon always gets glowing reviews.... as it should at 2 times the price! :) thanks.

I think you may find this video test between the two lenses interesting.

Considering I will use it for landscapes (corner sharpness) and maybe even at f2.8 at night I think the Canon is the likely winner. :o

The Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC is superior to both the Sigma 24-105 and Canon 24-105 and is the second best 24-70 on the market.

I agree, I find the 24-105 a great walk around but at the wider end it is weak. From what I have seen of the Sigma it is not better, maybe on par.

Now, more research and the Tamron looks like a winner. OK at f2.8-5.6 the edges are less sharp than the Canon but for landscapes I will be shooting f8-16 and for people I can live with unsharp edges. VC is a definate plus on a walkaround lens.

Back from Iceland and the roller coaster ride that is weather. We had rain, snow, hail, sun, rain, hail, snow... all in about the space of 10minutes and all aided by a gale force arctic wind. The Tamron has performed well and still works. Having the 2.8 option for the one night we saw the light show was a bonus, even if only for manually focussing with live view. VC is also very good, and helped when shooting f16 handheld in the gale force winds. Happy with my purchase. :)
