I was in Yellowstone last week with a friend for 4 days. We had heard about a fight in the Madison River the week prior to our arrival. We stumbled on to this skirmish when it was in progress....thinking it might be over shortly...naturally we scrambled to get a few images. It must have lasted between 15 and 20 minutes...enabling me to change lenses 3 times and take 5 minutes of video. One of the most incredible wildlife experiences I have ever witnessed. The bulls were both 7 points...and the fight started out very ferocious...but after awhile slowed down to spurts of activity...as they both were exhausted. I think I shot about 3 gigs in my 20D and am still going thru the images.

Wow! What an incredible experience that must have been. Probably was tough to put the equipment down and just watch for awhile, eh? Congratulations on witnessing a rare event in the wild!

What kind of equipment did you use? How fast was the SS?

I started with my always ready 100 - 400 IS Canon on a 20D...then as the bulls moved up the river....I set my tripod up and used the Canon 500 IS...then for some close ups...I added the 1.4X. I really was amazed at the length of the battle.

You've captured the feel of the moment very well. The water really adds to the excitement.

Could do with an increase in the contrast and brightness though.
