You may remember that last year I walked around 600 miles across Spain to raise funds for Cancer research, Well 2016 will see me hike up to base camp on Mount everest for the same reason ,  Although a year away it's time to start training and start looking at equipment, I will need a lightweight tripod around $300, I will probably rent a Sony a7 type camera and lens although things will change in the next year, ANY ideas on equipment from those who shoot at altitude

Has the area recovered from the earthquake and opened for visitors?

Dave, that's a great cause. Thank you for doing that. Good luck on your trip.
Cheers,

Dave,

Sounds like a great trip. A couple tripod options (out of many):

Sirui 025X. Carbon fiber, folds to about 11", very light, about 36" tall (without center column) works well with a camera like a NEX 6 or an A7 with a small lens. Not stable enough for big cameras or glass.

You might need to add weight as its small size makes it a little tougher in wind. But it works well with small mirrorless cameras. My travel tripod of choice. You can see pictures of it in action on my blog.

Feisol 3401. Carbon fiber. Folds to about 18". 52" tall without center column. Good light+mid weight tripod.

Both are pretty good for travel. Like the working height of the Feisol but love the small compact size of the Sirui.

Good luck and have fun.

Check out 3 LeggedThing tripods for portability. I haven't used them but a lot of photographers that do serious trekking stand by them.
