Informative slow-mo video of how an SLR shutter works.

I describe this in my flash workshops when talking about flash sync. The fastest sync speed is the fastest speed where you have a moment in time when the entire sensor is uncovered. As soon as you get into the moving slot you have to use high speed sync which leaves the flash on (in a very fast pulsing mode) for the entire time of the exposure.

you can certainly see how mirror and/or shutter bounce can cause soft images

Yup and it is at least part of the issue some are experiencing with the 7D2.
Top image, MLU on, silent shutter on, One shot focus, single frame mode:
Bottom image, 10FPS mode, AI Servo
100% crop, no post processing, or ACR sharpening.  A single block from a building at 400 feet shot at 700mm with a perfectly focus calibrated body.  Everything locked down hard... (Click on the image for a dark background to better see the effect)

I can't wait for Canon shooters to start using the 50mpix and listen to the complaints of soft focus.

Same pixel pitch as the 7D2, exactly the same issue but with a larger mirror and shutter, there will be more vibration.
