Canon Rebel T5i (Modified), Canon 70-200mm f2.8is II at 160mm, f2.8, 60 Second Exposures (38), ISO 1600, Astrotrac, ImagesPlus, Photoshop, Lightroom.  Dark Frames and Bias Frames Taken.  Total Exposure 38 Minutes.

Please view in shadowbox.

The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) located in the constellation of Auriga.

This is an image that could use a lot more integration time.  I actually photographed this back in April, which was at the tail end of when it was visible here in Vermont after Astronomical Twilight.  It is really a winter object, but at the time I was really interested in it so I decided to give it a try.

The results were horrible. I almost deleted all the images, but thankfully I did not, and now due to several weeks of cloudy nights I have been revisiting my raw files to apply techniques that I have learned over the few short months I have been into Astrophotography.

I was able to pull this image out of the 38 captures and you can start to see some really nice details, but what this image really needs is a lot more exposure time, to resolve the beautiful wisps of emission nebula.  Next winter, I will give it another try with better preparation!

If interested, you can read more about it on my blogpost here:

Patience pays off -- a great recovery! I can't help but think of Carl Sagan's oft parodied line about "billions and billions" of stars.

From the thumbnail I thought this was a volcano erupting! Amazing profusion of vibrant sparks of colour.
