"Bittersweet Ending"
An afternoon thunderstorm blew through a couple weeks ago with a clear sky to the west after it was through. There were double rainbows all the way across the sky. Unfortunately I didn't get to Great Falls National Park, where this photograph was created, early enough for the rainbows. Got some nice light though. Had to use ISO 400. My lord, the 7D is terrible when it comes to noise.
Technical Spectacle: Canon 7D, Canon 10-22. ~8 seconds @ f/13. ISO 400. Tripod.

Beautiful shot. Great light. Wonderful composition and use of shutter speed.

These type of shots with dark areas and lot's of contrast is not where the 7D shines :-)
I now use only my 1DX for landscape photography and get better results.
Nikon's D4s / D810 should produce even better results in the dark areas.

I really like this, Chris. Good composition and a great balance of foreground and sky. Did you use a grad ND filter? I'm puzzled by the "had to use ISO 400" comment. Would 16 seconds at ISO 200 given you too much water blur? Just curious.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg, I could have shot at ISO 200 but a few things made it not so ideal. There were bursts of wind that moved the plants every so often, and I wanted to reduce that. Also, the light was changing very quickly and I wanted to squeeze in more frames into the session. Having 16-20 second exposures made that less of a possibility. Finally, yeah, I don't generally like water when it gets too soft. The water in this image is already a bit soft for my tastes, so 16 seconds would have been even worse.

... Forgot to mention the blend. This is a blend of two images, one for the sky and one for the water, taken right after another. No grads for me!

Thanks for commenting  :)

Thanks, Chris. I was just curious as I enjoy the thought process behind tech choices. This makes total sense :-)

Cheers,
Greg

A rainbow couldn't improve much on this image. That is some wild water.

I really like the shutter speed you chose and the color in the sky.

This is so sweet, Chris! Clean, natural and masterfully-composed as always.
