The heart-shaped patch on a Sandhill Crane's head is red skin, not red feathers.  If he gets excited, angry or upset, the colour intensifies

Beautiful close up, Missy. I especially like the red and green contrasting colours.

I never knew about the "Red Skin" Missy. Thanks for sharing. RE the image - great detail and wonderful comp. The eye draws your attention in and the red skin then takes over. Outstanding!

Very cool. Never noticed the shape of the red patch and didn't know that it wasn't feathers. I like to learn something every day

Nice image, Missy! Great explanation on the red on the head since I haven't been as close to these birds, I couldn't tell. Or maybe I just needed to google or get a longer lens

Fantastic colors and textures in this one Missy! The details and comp are perfect too.
I wouldn't have figured the red wasn't feathers but seeing it at this scale I can get the picture, so to speak. Nice vision with this one.

The great detail really helps emphasize the design elements of this close-up, making this an interesting and unique image.
