Not technically ideal.
These Sea Otters were fighting or playing in Morro Bay for quite a while. When I got home and edited my images I couldn't understand what the weird colored stuff was all over the back of the otter with the white head. After looking at it for quite a while a light went on; oil.
Morro Bay is about 100 miles north of Santa Barbara where there had been a big oil spill.

Poor thing, the oil will clog up the coat and affect the air bubbles trapped in the fur which help them float and also regulate their body temperature. So apart from any oil ingested when they try to clean themselves, they will be seriously affected by the drop in body heat and lack of bouyancy. Not a good outlook for this little guy Richard.

Oh...but the oil companies are eagerly telling us it's all contained and there's no lasting effects. Thanks for publishing this...a picture is worth a thousand words!
