Join our Technical Editor and acclaimed professional nature photographer E.J. Peiker for an exclusive 3-day Phoenix, Arizona DuckShop™. This special bird photography workshop will put you right where you need to be to come home with breathtaking images of ducks, waders, and other waterfowl species at some of the best hot spots in the United States!

In a small group setting with no more than 5 photographers, E.J. will show you one-on-one the same techniques he uses in the field so that you can get the shot.

One of the Best Places for Duck Photography

Phoenix is a popular winter home for many species of waterfowl during which time they will be decked out in their full breeding plumage.

The possible species that you will get to see and photograph include Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, Ring-necked, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Canvasback, Lesser Scaup, Mallard, Green-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, and many other types of birds.

The locations in this itinerary for duck photography are only preliminary. The entire area will be thoroughly scouted by E.J. before the workshop to put you in the places where you will get the best photos and the maximum number of species possible.

Day 1

Participants should plan to arrive before 7:00 PM on the first day of the workshop. E.J. will give an evening presentation and discussion covering topics such as photographic lens technique, exposure, lighting, and composition, as well as introducing likely species we will photograph.

Day 2

We will begin the day in Phoenix at one of our premier waterfowl photography locations in the area where we will photograph Northern Pintails, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, and a number of other species including Pied-billed Grebes with breeding plumage. Historically, this park offers some surprise species.

In the afternoon we will be in Gilbert, one of the area’s primary wintering grounds for a variety of duck species and one of the best places to photograph Neotropic Cormorants, and in some years, Canvasback.

Day 3

In the morning we will go to one of the nation’s top birding spots, the Gilbert Water Ranch, where waterfowl as well as a variety of Egretta and shorebirds are possible to see. In the afternoon we will photograph Lesser Scaup and other diving ducks in Tempe.

Day 4

Our duck photography workshop will conclude in various locations throughout Gilbert with the possibility of a large number of species including all three North American Teal species and Ruddy Ducks, which should start to show their breeding plumage by this time of year, as well as a large variety of other birds.

“A superb workshop, excellent locations—LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE LOCATION—astonishing variety and an AWESOME leader who was patient, helpful, and an unbelievable fund of birding knowledge as good as his photography. E.J. is the best—he is there to make sure you get it right. At the end of the second day I felt my skill level went up a couple of notches (f-stops!).” –Ramesh K.

Interaction with E.J. was terrific. He was entertaining, always offering help as needed and extremely knowledgeable about a wide range of topics. I had been wanting to take this workshop from the early days of E.J. posting his duck images on NatureScapes. It was well worth the wait and was immensely enjoyable.

Great photographers are not always great instructors; E.J. Peiker is both. He offered suggestions and made himself available immediately to help with any questions or problems in the field. We felt he was there primarily to help the participants and provide a great experience.
