2010 Images of the Year
Previous Black Rhino Charge
© Peter Delaney

While on a lion photo shoot in the Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West province of South Africa, my guide and I saw two black rhinos, a critically endangered species. Suddenly the adult and calf began running headlong in our direction. Believe it or not, my first response was to get the shot. When the rhinos had filled my viewfinder, I looked up and realized they were charging our vehicle! We shouted and banged on the doors and they skidded off in a cloud of dust. We not only escaped the heart-stopping experience unharmed, but with vivid memories and this great image.

Equipment Used: Nikon D3, 200-400 mm ƒ/4 lens at 200mm, 1/1000s, ƒ/4.0, ISO 1000, beanbag
