The image was captured at White Point Nature Preserve in San Pedro, CA.
I had seen these American Kestrels at this location for some time but they were always on the chain link fence surrounding one of the buildings at a former military installation. Even though I had captured a few images of the birds on the fence, I taught about how good it would be to get an image of them on a more natural looking perch. So, I picked up a suitable branch off a nearby fallen tree and attached it to the chain link fence and left it there with the hope that the birds might just decide to use it. A few days after, I was surprised to see the male Kestrel on the perch with a natural prey, and shortly after the female flew on to the perch to get fed.
