I have lost touch with softawre to clone a HDD as a backup.  What is the easist, simplest software to use?

And the best file (including images) backup software?

I've used Macrium Reflect up to now. The free version did everything well but it's retired now and they jumped on the subcription train as most software companies try nowadays, If you have the free version or still have a chance to get one, it will remain valid, AFAIK. but gets no updates anymore. I personally heve not yet decided if I'm willing to accept another subscription model, though: Macrium has been very good and reliable from my experience. They have a 30days trial too but it's obviously restricted. So if you're ready for the paid subscription, Macrium certainly remains a recommendation. For the backup of separate folders or projects I still use the old synctoy tool which has worked for me. So I have not tried other options

Cloning, if that's what you really want to do, Macrium Reflect but I don't know why you would want to clone a data drive, you simply want a backup program that adds the files that aren't already on the drive rather than creating a whole new mirror image every time. In that case, GoodSync is a good choice.

That's right and besides GoodSync , take a look at Gs Richcopy 360 and Syncback, the best in this field

I was thinking about cloning the boot drive with all my applications installed.  I have a SSD.  I will give Macrium Reflect a try.  I want something really simple.  Some 'simple' software have all these check boxes to go thru which makes the software not simple to use :-)

For backing up, Let me have a second look at Goodsync.
