I'm headed to South America for a workshop next month.  Can anyone recommend some sun protective clothing?  I'm going to be on a boat in the sun for several days each day.  I'm pasty white and burn easily.  I plan to use a fly fishing sun shirt and a full coverage hat.  I have recently found the Shelta hats which are great for on the water, but I'm looking for additional suggestions.  Thanks

I wear long sleeve fishing shirts like simms big sky fishing shirt and similar shirts from others.  These full synthetic shirts provide upf 50+.  Simms and others also have fingerless synthetic sun gloves.  I typically wear blue jeans but also have full synthetic pants (rei or mountain hardware not shorts) which simms also has.  I use a tilley LTM6 wide brimmed hat. Others make wide brim hats too. You can also get a hat that looks like the foreign legion in North Africa that covers your neck and ears from simms.  Might check art Morris's Birds as Art site.  He is also sun sensitive and written several pieces on sun gear.  Take sun tan lotion for all exposed skin as the sun will reflect off the water.

I used to do tours where I was in sun all day next to water and sunburn was an issue.  I used (as someone else mentioned) a Tilley LTK6 Airflo hat because they have a flexible rim to not interfere with putting a camera to my face.  They hold a nice shape, dry quickly, and have a retention lace.  Wrap around sunglasses are important. I also used a neck gaiter (Amazon has bargains) and long sleeve fishing shirts, mostly Columbia.

Sometimes we travelled to where mosquitos were an extreme problem.  Found they bite through fishing shirts and nylon pants.  So went with Levis tucked into LL Bean high top boots.  Thick cotton long sleeve shirt, brown jersey garden gloves, mosquito netting over the Tilley hat.
