I tried the focus mode suggested by Gene for BIF. It works well.

Nikon Z8
Nikon Z400 f 4.5 +1.4x TC
ISO 640
1/2500 s
F 6.3

Fabulous! A dynamic shot-I can really feel the action with those long, extended wings. What was the suggestion by Gene? I missed it somehow....

(good to see that 400 and 1.4 getting good use Karl.  I know it's one of your fav' combo's and is easy to see why).

Beautiful capture Karl.  The wing position is fabulous. (and interesting that the fish head is facing you).

Beautiful.

I'll have to experiment with auto (all) autofocus mode ... I'm currently using pretty much the exact focus modes you described using.

Thank you all. Auto (all) works most of the time against water and sky, even against man made objects as it is shown. However, if there are other(static) birds around, it jumps over to them. The keeper rate is about  80 percent.

Thanks Karl.   Did you replace the BG with sky? Very effective if you did!

No, I did not. The top image is actually has the water as a background.
The bird flew right above the pier, and then went down and it shows the structure of the pier but the bird is still sharp. It carries around his fish to show off.
The pier is full of Caspian Terns.

Got it! Just looked odd to see one picture in the thumbnail and another in the full frame. By the way , thanks DAVE, for pointing me to the dialogue. I'm a basket case today!!!

Great takeoff pose and the fish adds to it, Karl. Neat to have a good number of these birds around.

Excellent flight shot, Karl. The downwing perspective is quite dramatic, plus the captured fish, is a fine extra as well.
