It is with great sadness that I share this news. Carol lost her brave battle with cancer yesterday. Her beloved husband, Dave was by her side. E.J. and I have both sent our condolences to the family. Carol will be missed by so many. Her contributions here and love of nature will live on through her images and memories of all the support that she gave us over the years. She was a supporter of naturescapes from the beginning nearly 21 years ago. She was a friend, mentor, and a selfless human being. I’ll miss her!

Oh no!!! I can't believe I'm reading this. She was such an integral part of NSN. She will be so missed. Condolences to all her family and friends.

So sad to hear this.  I don’t know many people who have given more to NSN with such flair, love and enthusiasm and will be sorely missed.  My heart felt condolences to Dave and her family.  Our thoughts and love are with you.  Carol has been a rock and a blessing.

I just can't believe this!
I am at a loss for words.
She was my NSN buddy and mentor.
We exchanged many IMs here at NSN over the years and talked about many things, not just photography related.
I will miss her!

My condolences to Dave, her family and friends.

I am devastated to hear that Carol passed on so soon. (I knew she was ill, but....)
Carol was a dear friend, mentor, and supporter of NSN as well as someone who took the time to make  thoughtful and witty comments on everyone's work. I will miss her terribly. Condolences to her Dave and family-that's hardly enought to say!

I will miss her so much. She was the friendliest most dedicated moderators among all. I have hard time to believe that she is not with us anymore. RIP. Carol

Carol will be sorely missed both by NSN and on a personal level. Even though we never met in person, we had very regular communication and I considered her not just a colleague but a dear friend. Dave kept Greg and me informed throughout the final few weeks and Carol sent me a goodbye message a few days before her passing and it left me in tears and even now just thinking about her message has tears welling up in my eyes. Rest in peace Carol.

Carol will be very much missed both in this community and outside of it. She and I worked together at the inception of NSN as moderators in Wildlife and she carried on long term after I ran out of time and energy for it.  For several years after I left my position she made a point of checking in with me, usually between Thanksgiving in the US and the end of the year.  Lately I have been trying to catch up with her before she catches up with me, putting more energy into our connection.  We would exchange news about our lives etc and then look forward to catching up again the next year. For some weird reason this summer I got the urge to connect and I sent her a video of some loon work I had done.  She shared her news with me.  As an example of the kind of person she was, she said she did not want to share it with EJ as it was fourth of July weekend in the US and she did not want to mess up his holiday... she always had empathy and compassion for others and showed it every day with her uplifting comments and constructive help here at NSN.  Even after her hospice care started, she continued to comment in the wildlife forum, trying to uplift others while in the middle of the biggest crisis of life we will all ever face.  I feel so fortunate that our paths crossed and we could work together in wildlife for a few years and then remain friends after that.  The news is devastating and she will be greatly missed.  I will keep Dave in my thoughts as he navigates this part of his life also.   Carol's last email to me was a bit of advice: make the best of each day buddy...

Be well everyone

Dennis-I so appreciate your post about Carol. You said everything I wanted to say and then some, including the same advice she gave me to make the best of each day. She also said something  in response to a card I sent her:" Earthy life dies, but heartfelf friendship stays constant dear girl. Carol. xx. "
That got the tears rolling, but I will always cherish those words. I share them hoping they will  also bring some  insight into her beautiful  loving  self, even as she knew her days were numbered.

I’ll miss her, though I only knew her from her comments in the forums.
A kind and gentle spirit, the kind of person the world needs more of.

I remember her only as a moderator in the bird photo gallery forum and she was generous and always had something positive to say.  Sadly, another victim to cancer.
