Hyacinth Orchid Dipodium variegatum

From late last year, the hyacinth orchid is common is bushland near home, they are myco-heterotrophic depending on fungus for food supply and closely associated with Eucalyptus trees. They don't do photosynthesis and get everything they need through mycorrhizal parasitism.

Taken with the 300mm f4, also took the same shot with the 12-40 lens at f2.8 and it has a remarkably different background. Both shots are 10-image stacks.

Another fascinating species.
Interesting comparison with the 2 lenses - I prefer the less busy smooth 300mm version - just my take.
I guess the closest we have is the Bird's-nest orchid: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neottia_nidus-avis

Yes, I like to 300mm version as well, it really shows the advantages of long focal length, the 12-40 version has a little higher magnification and a stop wider open, but the background is closer to being in focus. The tele not only allows you to better select the background to include it blurs it more I guess because the magnification on the distant trees in the background is higher than it is with the 12-40 at 38mm.

Interesting how plants use differing methods for feeding/survival Chris. Thanks for the info. I also prefer the smoother 300 shot as presented.

Nice grouping of stems, great capture of the intricate flowers. I like both versions. The 300mm version has the expected simple background for that angle of view, but the other lens give more context, and more contrast.
