An alert alpha male of a pack of African painted dogs (African wild dogs) came right up to me as I was lying on my belly in a dry riverbed in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. This remains one of my favourite safari memories from the past few years...

He really does look alert, makes you wonder what's going on in his mind. Good thing is they didn't consider you prey. Would they go after humans if they are alone?

It would be one of my favourite memories too, Morkel.  To have one of these beautiful, intelligent animals so close would be a dream.  The image you got is superb.  I love it!

From what I recall, Cape hunting dogs are not a threat to humans....

You're assumption that Wild Dog's do not consider us prey, is absolutely correct, the same applies whether you are alone or not.
In fact (with some packs) they are very curious, and often have had them come right up to me (within 1M/3ft) when on the ground.

Cracking shot Morkel.
One of my favourite things is to track WD on foot. It's an adrenalin rush!

Thanks, Marc, and good to know that they are simply curious.

Thanks a lot for the kind comments, folks.

Alex - can reiterate what Marc said, they are not a threat to humans at all.
