  Maybe I am misunderstanding this, but that is for older iPhones, they had both the eSIM as well as a slot for a physical SIM.  In the iPhone 14, they have eliminated the slot for the physical SIM and only have the eSIM.  So if I travel, I can't buy a SIM card in the country I am traveling  to and put it in SIM slot.  It has made me question whether to get the iPhone 14.

I spoke to back country people in the Yellowstone Jackson hole area several years ago.  They moved to iridium network because Globalstar was not as reliable.  That of course may have changed as it was probably something like 10 years back.  I'm waiting for more reports from owners.  If ti really works, I may get rid of my sat phone and rely on inreach and my iPhone 14.

  That is a good point.  According to the link above, some of the Android phones may use the Iridium network.  Not sure how far along these agreements are.

My understanding is that with an esim you can still switch carriers, in fact it is easier than the cards. the catch is that smaller providers and many foreign providers may not have updated to accept esim yet. I still haven’t tried it, When I am traveling overseas I use the Verizon $10/day plan someone mentioned. I only activate it on days I need it, and it is easy and just works. I like the idea of satellite SOS someone mentioned, so bought the iPhone 14 pro max as soon as it was released, but I admit the satellite SOS is new and not a lot of testing or user reports yet. In my last two vehicles, I have had Onstar or now the Jeep equivalent. I did some unscientific testing comparing Onstar range to my cell phone range, and felt Onstar had a bit better range to call for help, but in my front wheel drive Buick I still got out of range of Onstar several times without leaving tolerable good dirt roads. I haven’t even done unscientific testing on the new car which has a similar though not as nice system.

If you really want to be covered for this, I think you need a satellite connection by Iridium or (if it proves good) new-model Apple phone, or else an Inreach device and subscription.
