Looks like the D500 is being discontinued.

End of the Line?

Interesting, they must have a replacement coming or something.. but with Nikon that
could be 2 years away.
Do they think every amateur bird or wildlife enthusiast is going to spend $5000 on the Z9?
The other Z cameras are not anywhere near the D500 for AF.
I will hang on to mine, I don't see anything replacing it for me for awhile.

Ditto - same here - the D500 has become my favourite "do everything - go anywhere" piece of kit and will remain my tool of choice until a decent replacement comes along - which knowing Nikon - will be a while!

OTOH - 6 years is a long time in todays fast changing consumer orientated world - where the environmental impact of this high-tech hedony is sadly of no concern.

"Do they think every amateur bird or wildlife enthusiast is going to spend $5000 on the Z9?" Not me thats for sure, I am currently looking to but a used D500 instead of going to FX for bird photography.

I hate to say it but I think the handwriting is on the wall. RIP SLRs.

When it comes to BIF no mirrorless camera can match Nikon D500 and Nikon D850. I have tried Fujifilm, Sony a6600, Sony a7R III, a7RIV, Sony a9 II and none came close to Nikon DSLR BIF shooting in my experience. It might be me and not the cameras, I don't know. I only kept the Sony a7R4 and sold the rest, but when it comes to BIF shooting, I use the aforementioned Nikon cameras.

After a couple of weeks, I am beginning to think, that at least in my hands, the Z9 can in some cases beat the D500.  The extra weight of the Z9 makes it harder for me to keep it lifted and ready to shoot, but it does grab on focus faster.  I haven't tried using it on a tripod (that will come soon), but it is impressive in its ability to rapidly grab focus, even with my 500mm PF and a 1.7TC.  A couple recent examples of a recent shoot with Lewis's woodpeckers:
