macOS Catalina not reading card/from card reader

I have only just changed to Catalina and everything works fine except when I stuck the compackflash card into the USB3 reader, nothing happened, i.e. drive not showing up like it did in Mojave. Restarted, checked connections etc. to no avail. Has anyone experienced this? What's the solution, if any?

FYI, I have managed to download everything by using my wife's Windows machine without a hitch. No, not interested in changing system, just like to find a workable solution. TIA.

Which brand and model of card reader are you using? You may need to upgrade card readers.

It's a Kingston USB3 card reader, Joe. It's been trouble free for years and clearly still works, albeit with Windows and older macOS. Do you really think by simply switching to a different/new card reader is all that's required? If so, which?

Make sure that the MAC port is working by trying a USB stick in it, or some other external ddvice that has worked in the past.

Done all the usual checks, Mark, including trying different cables and other drives. It's only the card+reader combo that's not working.

If this is the one, check the compatibility chart. You may want to contact Kingston.

Almost, Joe, but a version older, it's the FCR-HS3. I have contacted Kingston support and see what they say. It isn't a problem to just get another unit, if I know that it is just a compatibility issue. But I would like to continue to use it if I can, not least because it is a real shame to throw something away when it is not faulty, to a landfill.

There is a firmware update for your reader available on the following page. Maybe you could try to download it on the Windows machine, since it says that the upgrade utility is not compatible with Mac OS. Shouldn’t hurt to try.

Joe, I downloaded the firmware update and it worked! Thank you very much. Wish I was as resourceful as you.
