Using Nikon Live view tethered to Laptop

I am using a Nikon D850 and the Nikon ES-2 digitizer to 'scan-in' some old slides. I successfully tethered the camera to my laptop using LightRoom. However, I cannot use live view on my laptop screen to make exposure adjustments and fine tune focus--I can only do this using the camera's LCD screen. Apparently, Nikon Camera Control 2 software will allow this but it is $150. Is there a cheaper option available or am I just doing something wrong?

Most of my friends who shoot with Nikon cameras tether using Capture One Pro.

By far the easiest and best way to tether virtually any camera is Capture One - mindlessly simple. Hook it up via the cable, click a single icon and off you go. There is a reason it is the standard in the fashion studio world where everything is shot tethered.

Many thanks for the suggestions. Will give Capture One a try.

Tether Tools offers Smart Shooter 4 which can be used as a standalone alone or as a Lightroom plug-in. Apparently there is no tethering software for Nikon that will record to both the card in the camera and your computer at the same time.
Smart Shooter 4 They offer a free trial download.
