Very interesting. Thanks for posting. Sounds like the newer high MP mirrorless will require us to use the OEM lenses designed for them.

Um, they already do, both the Z7 and D850 are over 36mp.

You may have meant to write 45mp in your title?

Overall this article is just plain stupid and they destroy their own argument by showing that their entire "holy trinity" of DSLR lenses out-resolve the sensor as well as several others - in other words you have lenses covering from 14 to 200mm that out-resolve the sensor plus the super teles do too so basically you have 14-800 that out-resolve the sensor.  Like I said, they basically destroy their own argument.  Why on earth should every lens in the lineup out-resolve the sensor, are you really going to put cheap consumer oriented lenses on a 45+ mp camera, if so, you get what you pay for but stating that they shouldn't produce a camera with higher resolution because all of the lenses don't resolve the sensor is literally the dumbest thing I have ever read on that particular website.  There are many lenses on the market that easily out-resolve 45mp that pair very well with that sensor and do fine on higher megapixel cameras (which is easily tested by simply mounting those lenses on a a7r4).  Perhaps a better question would be whether or not Nikon should just develop cameras with higher resolution going forward for the Z-mount which makes it much easier to design ultra-high resolution lenses...

Or something like: "Why Nikon should not have made DSLRs over 36 mp."

It seems like lately there have been a lot of stupid articles written on many of the photography sites. It seems they all have, in their own eyes, the best ideas of what features a camera should and shouldn’t have to be the ideal cameras. And the best ideas on how to be a professional photographer, compose a photo, use lighting, what company should stop producing certain models or types of cameras, how to pose a model and on and on, ad nauseam! I think the writers need to spend more time doing photography and less time trying to figure out equipment, style, composition, etc. Many of these writers just seem to need to meet deadlines with a catchy title.

"You may have meant to write 45mp in your title?"

Nope. Just a copy and paste.

It would seem obvious to me that every company will have high resolving lenses along with a few stinkers, especially a company that has been in business as long as Nikon.

Can Nikon or any other lens manufacturers for that matter know how many megapixels a lens that they are going to make can resolve? I suppose if they do and it's not ridiculously costly, they would make a lens that has the most resolving power just in case they would be making a 100 or more megapixel camera down the road?? If you were Nikon, is that what you would do? Some of the lenses that he tested were made years ago so could that be that when Nikon made them, it did not occur to them that they would be making a 45 megapixel camera?? But then some of the lenses on that list are not exactly new lenses and yet they could handle, per the author, 45 mp very well. What's going on? Or, maybe, what Nikon should do now is to make new lenses for its 45 mp dslr? Guess that's not happening given people is crazy about mirrorless these days :-)

I don't see why not, you can simply pop a high megapixel cell phone sensor behind it and move it all around the image circle to see how it resolves.

It's funny that this article focuses on "full-frame" Nikon DSLRs & lenses. Check out the sensors on their current DX range. Their pixel density when extrapolated to an FX sensor is well north of 36MP, and their 24MP DX is close to 54MP! Does that mean that APS-C uses have less of a choice even though they use the "sweet spot" of an FX lens? Or maybe the DX lenses are simply designed with the higher pixel density sensor in mind?

No it means that the article is complete nonsense.
