hello dear photographers.
i am on the market for a new small lightweight tripod.
i still use my old trusty 1548 gitzo tripod and also have the old aluminium explorer tripod from gitzo for macro.
anyone using the  gitzo gigt1545t traveler series 1 ? is it a good buy ? other better alternatives ?
the folded size of 16,7" looks nice...

thanks in advance.

I'm a big fan of the MeFoto Globetrotter - not the air model, the carbon fiber one:

Another vote for MeFoto.  I use the Road Trip, carbon fiber.  Very well made, compact and light.

E.J. do you this tripod with the Sony a7RII and a large lens like the Sony 100-400 or any other heavy lens?
Also how good is the ball head? Is it as good as a RRS BH 30?

Globetrotter holds larger loads

I use the Induro CLT 204 Carbon Fiber Tripod. Weighs 3.6 pounds with a capacity of 35.3 pounds.

On the meFoto tripod - can the center post be removed and the ballhead attached directly to the tripod?
thanks

You can remove the center post but the head won't mount then - you would have to cut down the center post to get really low to the ground.  One of the legs does detach and turn into a credible monopod.

Thanks E.J.
Looks interesting none the less. Price is certainly reasonable.

Hey Andre

Depends what you're shooting, what gear you're using, and what you mean by "small lightweight for traveling"?

For backpacking trips I use a very small Gitzo (GT 0531, 3 piece legs), with the little RRS ballhead (BH25) I could find and the whole setup is under 2lbs. It's been superb.

I also have a slightly larger Gitzo (I forget which model) which I prefer when I'm not carrying a week's worth of food and shelter with me.

I don't like that they have a center column, and would prefer a tripod without one, but this setup works well enough for me so far.

Cheers
Carl

Make sure you change the page from Aluminum to CF - the price goes up a lot ;)

Looks like a great solution for people that aren't very tall and/or need to get low to the ground.

is that correct ?

If you are asking about the MeFoto, the answer is yes!  You can also remove that head and use a different head if you wish.  For example, if my travel isn't overly weight sensitive, just size sensitive, I sometimes put an RRS BH-40 on there with a lever clamp and panorama head.

take a look at the feisol ct-3342. Just as tall without the center post and probably a little lighter (hard to tell as one comes with a head and the other does not). Downside about 7 inches longer folded. With only 3 leg sections instead of 5, I would suspect sturdier if you believe mfg specs almost 2x the load rating.
