Congratulations! This is the Image of the Week selection for the Birds Gallery, week ending 19th October, 2012!Rainbow Bee eater (Merops ornatus)
Image
Canon 7D - 800mm | 1/1000s @ f10, iso800, setup, natural prey | pp:contrast/color adjustments, crop + sharpen for web

Taken yesterday arvo, the sun was still a little high, but squally cloud moved in shortly after this was taken & the Bee eaters & bugs quickly disappeared
The image is deceptive as the bird was actually mid 'bash', removing the butterflys "sting" :D
Hope you enjoy,

Best Regards
Karl

James, Im not sure if you're familiar with this group of birds, but once caught they will energetically bash all their prey against the nearest hard surface to remove the sting. They will do this regardless of the presence of stings.
As bees & wasps make up a fair portion of their diet I guess their taking no chances :D
Although this frame was caught during a brief pause in strikes the energy isn't implied, so belies what I was actually seeing. Hope that makes sense.

Cheers,
Karl
