Canon R1
100-400mm +1.4x
f8
1/2500
ISO 5000

I've been trying a few different things with this camera, one of which was shooting in Manual with auto ISO because the camera has such amazing high ISO performance.  For this session I decided to shoot at 1/2500 to ensure an adequate shutter speed should the bird take off, the f8 was a given based on the use of the extender and the 5000 ISO was the result (I have the max set for 25,600)  I have to say that it is so much more fun shooting when I can focus on the artistic aspects and only need to think about the shutter speed and aperture.

Another great shot- I like how the owl stands out against the BG. Nice perch too. I like the previous one just a bit more-, but they are both pretty magical.

Great to have a cooperative GGO nearby, I like the setting in this one even better.

Malcolm, The snow really gives the image context. The camera certainly looks like an iso monster.

Another superb GGO image, Malcolm. ( I find manual with auto iso, works the best for me, generally). The falling snow, and the snow on the background branches, certainly makes for a fine setting. Excellent perch, here, as well. The eye contact is certainly a high light, as it is for most birds of prey, photography, I would say. The R1, is working out so well for your images, from those posted here recently, on Naturescapes, but I would say that the skill of the photographer, may be the most decisive factor, in fine images, such as yours.

Thank you David, yes I was quite pleased with my good fortune to have it start to snow a bit while I was there.

Thank you Cynthia, for me any time I get to spend in this environment with a GGO is magical, I just hope I can get a few images I like.

Thank you Axel, I've always found that GGO's are fairly tolerant of people as long as you don't encroach on their hunting area, they don't seem to mind an audience.

Thank you Peter ... nothing like an Owl on a snowy perch for me.

Thank you Gene, Yes given the opportunity I'm really trying to ensure that there is an environmental context to my images, it isn't always possible but it helps with the story.  Yes so far I'm quite pleased with the R1's capabilities.  I literally don't worry about the ISO.
