Cynthia, this is not a "duck, but rather an Auklet, which is a seabird. Karl, probably the reason they aren't posted much is because they are not easy to photograph; especially on the water like this. They rarely come in close enough to land, so you have to get out in a boat for them; preferably a kayak for a lower angle.. ;) Photographing birds out in the ocean from a kayak is lots of fun, but also risky for you and your gear.

I can't recall seeing this species posted here on Naturescapes in the past several years, so a fine capture Tim! The water looks so good here, with the colour, patterns, and the reflection, showing as it does. ( Is the Oak Bay Beach Hotel still open? My late father new the owner,( she was a client of his, many many years ago). Thank you.
