Very sad news from the Serengeti yesterday, Snyggve aka BJ (Bob Jnr), the most famous lion in the Serengeti was killed in a vicious fight with 3 younger males.
He was a long time ruler of the Namiri Plains together with his coalition partner Tryggve.
BJ was the son of the legendary C-Boy or Bob as he was more colloquially known and one part of the formidable team Bob & Ziggy (Hildur) BJ was dominant in Namiri for 7 of his long lived 12 years and sadly this beautiful male has now died fighting an honorable death among lions.
We pay our respects and say goodbye to what was the Brad Pitt equivalent of lions throughout the entire Serengeti.

RIP BJ, it was an absolute honor to have known and photograph you for the greater part of your magnificent life!

Sad news Marc. Life can be brutal where males are concerned and has gone full circle for this magnificent King.

The image is fitting tribute. Top drawer.
Make your life spectacular!

With male lion cubs having a constant battle to survive even to adulthood (about one in eight) BJ did amazingly well to survive to 12 years, and at least he died as king without just fading away. A truly worthy ruler of his pride with his coalition partner. May his spirit fly free over his favourite kopje.

I have enjoyed all the beautiful images of this magnificent male that you have shared with us over the years Marc. Thank you.

Carol.

Great tribute to this lion, Marc. From your description, it sounds as if he had some pretty good 12 years.

Have also just heard news that his coalition bro Tryggve was also killed in a subsequent fight shortly after.

It's tragically ironic that IF both had been together the outcome may have been different.

What a beautiful tribute to this amazing lion. Have enjoyed your great photos of him in the past. I guess it's a sad reality to know how his life ended, but perhaps, as you say, it was an honorable death.

IF only, Marc.  IF only.....  They are together again now.  Their time had come.
