GALAPAGOS PHOTO TOUR, JANUARY 19-30, 2016

Photo Tour: Nate Chappell is leading this tour to the Galapagos Islands. We will stay on 3 different islands at very highly rated lodges. We will also visit 2 other islands on this trip and you will have a full day for hummingbird photography in Quito before we fly to the Galapagos. You will get a lot of time with the following iconic Galapagos species: Blue-footed Booby, Galapagos Tortoise (in the wild), Marine Iguana, Galapagos Sea Lions as well as many Galapagos land birds, frigatebirds and flamingos. We should also get all 3 species on boobies (including nesting Red-footed), Galapagos Hawk, Flightless Cormorant and Waved Albatross.

Why a hotel based tour? Almost every other photo tour to the Galapagos is a yacht based trip. There are several advantages to going on a hotel based tour. First and foremost in many of the photography locations we are not time limited - we can spend as much time as we like in a particular location and we can plan the tour to take advantage of the best lighting situations. This is not the case on the vast majority of yacht based tours. Secondly the rooms are much larger and more comfortable, you will get better sleep. Lastly if you are a single customer the single supplement is much less expensive than going on a yacht. If you want your own room on a yacht you typically have to pay double the normal price to get the privacy you want.

Itinerary: We will fly from Quito to San Cristobal Island.  On San Cristobal we will stay at a lodge close to a beach that has a resident sea lion colony.  While on San Cristobal we will have 2 sessions at La Loberia, my favorite place to photograph in the Galapagos without having to take a boat.  Galapagos Sea Lions, Lava Herons and other birds abound.  A hike up the cliff face yields great flight shots of Swallow-tailed Gull, Blue-footed Booby and Red-billed Tropicbird.  We will also take a day long boat trip which ends up on the north end of the island where after a hike we photograph a Red-footed Booby colony.  While on San Cristobal we also visit a highland lake where 2 species of frigatebird come to drink and a beach which is excellent for Blue-footed Booby closeups.  Then we take a boat transfer to Isabela Island.  On the way to Isabela we stop at Floreana Island to photograph the most brightly colored of the Marine Iguana sub species and we attempt to photograph the rare Floreana Mockingbird.  On Isabela Island we have 2 nights right on the beach.  For our full day on Isabela we take a day long boat trip to photograph Galapagos Hawk, Flightless Cormorant and others species.  Next we transfer by boat to Santa Cruz Island where we spend 3 nights. This transfer is good for seeing and photographing pelagics such as Waved Albatross and Galapagos Petrel. Our lodge on Santa Cruz has it's own waterhole that often attracts Giant Tortoises and many other birds.  We will take a boat trip to North Seymour Island and to Bachas Beach on the north end of the island to photograph Blue-footed Boobies, Frigatebirds, Flamingos, Land Iguana, Lava Gull and other species. We will also visit the highlands, see the lava tunnels and photograph several species of Galapagos Finch and other endemic land birds. We will have a full day visiting 2 different ranches for photography of Galapagos Tortoises in the wild and many land birds.  Then we fly from Santa Cruz back to Quito, Ecuador, have one last night in a nice hotel near the airport and then fly home.

Leader and Guide: Nate Chappell will be the tour leader and photography instructor. He will help you get the most out of your Galapagos trip by giving instruction in the field, a presentation on photographing birds and wildlife and by planning the best locations and times to photograph. He has previously led 3 Galapagos hotel based photo tours. We will also have a Master Galapagos Naturalist Guide with us the entire tour.  He has been a guide in the Galapagos for more than 20 years. He is an expert on Galapagos birds and wildlife and will help us find the difficult species.

Maximum photographers: 8 with a maximum of 10 total participants.

Cost: $5,700 with a $900 single supplement. Nonphotographer spouse/companion $4,900. Deposit is $1,000. Cost includes round trip airfare from Quito to the Galapagos and back, all lodging, meals, transportation, guiding and instruction. It does not include drinks, Galapagos National Park entrance fee of $100 (required to be paid in cash), or round trip airfare from your home to Quito, Ecuador.  Sign up for both Galapagos and Ecuador (January 7-19) and receive a $500 discount.
