Recently I've been playing with shooting video a bit. Learning to "think" along the lines of a storyboard, and how to edit, is certainly a challenge. To be honest, I'm a bit dismayed at the general lack of information on the web dealing with shooting nature video. With most DSLR cameras now having video capabilities you'd think there would be more information on shooting video. I'll also admit to a bit of surprise that the Video Sharing & Discussion forum sees so little participation. Again, since most of our cameras have the ability to shoot video footage one would think there would be more curiosity about it.

Now, after talking about DSLR video capability, you may be surprised when I tell you all the footage used in this short video was shot using a small action camera... the SJCam SJ 4000. Honestly, the reason for that is simple: I messed up! I was taking photos of this waterfalls and wanted to play with video as well. I shot some footage with my DSLR and with my action camera. The problem with the DSLR footage was that I totally spaced and didn't consider that the accepted video formation is a widescreen format... "landscape" layout. I'd flipped my camera to vertical for photos and didn't think to go back to horizontal for the video footage! That didn't occur to me until I reached the next waterfalls. Live and learn.

So here's a very basic attempt at putting together a short nature video. The subject, Hidden Falls, is located in Hanging Rock State Park near Danbury, North Carolina. There are 5 "promoted" waterfalls within the park and, as I'm given to understand, a few more that would require a bit of bushwacking to find. The 5 waterfalls, Lower Cascades, Upper Cascades, Hidden Falls, Window Falls and Tory's Falls are all short hikes from their respective parking lots. (less than a mile for each). As I mentioned I'm trying to learn. I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions.
