The process of metamorphosis from the larval stage to the pupal stage is generally not very interesting to observe during the course of its four day duration. Once the larvae is ready to change, it finds a place to settle. It then adheres its tail-end to the leaf, the house foundation, a blade of grass, or any other objects that might be in the immediate vicinity of the host plants on which it has developed (in this case, a Rose of Sharon shrub.) The larvae assumes an arched laying down position and seems motionless as the transformation begins inside the larval cuticle. But as the process enters into its latter stage, the "larvae" will move around as it remains fixed in position. The movements can often be quite violent, reflecting the radical changes going on within.
