There have been reports on other forums that the r5 II falsely reports exhausted batteries in low temperatures 32f and lower.  Simply removing and reinserting the same battery can clear it.  It seems to be triggered when a camera goes to sleep and you try to restart it.  Anyone had similar problems?

Interesting, and something to keep in mind. I can't tell yet because it hasn't been below freezing while photographing around here.

I just got back from camping on the sea ice of the Weddell Sea and no problem. I wasn't super cold, -5 to -10 C. I kept spare  batteries in my parka pockets, sometimes with a hand warmer.

Good to hear that you didn't have problems with the batteries and I think -10 C would have been cold enough to encounter potential issues, judging from what some people experienced. Is your camera on 1.0.1 or 1.0.2? I'm wondering if Canon addressed the issue with the most recent firmware update.

As I re-read the original post, maybe I was a bit too glib is saying no problem. This is because, as I do for the old R5, I often turn off the R52 to save batteries because both cameras just eat batteries. This is not to say it never went to sleep on me, which is when the problems has been reported to occur.

I went through 3-4 batteries a day with the R52, similar to what I use with the R5 in less cool conditions. I should have paid more attention to whether the batteries seemed to suddenly die sooner than expected though nothing like that jumped out at me. I was too enthralled with the emperor penguins in front of me on the ice to notice, I guess.

So now I am keen to hear what you and others find out about this camera in cold places because I won't be anywhere very cold for quite a while now.
