I have a 400mm f4.5 S lens - not sure how I got it so quickly, but I do have my NPS status now
I have been shooting mostly my 500mm f/5.6 PF but it was hung up with parts problems in Nikon repair but in end Nikon replaced my 500 with a refurbished lens - so I have done no direct comparisons between the two yet with the Z9
But reason I ordered the 400mm was due to Z-mount and so far I have really been impressed my Z s-line lens
plus 20% lighter than 500mm PF, MFD down to 8.21' vs 500mm's 9.21' and third ring on z-lens that lets me adjust exp comp or f-stop (I like that better than using camera dials)
Size really same and lens hood design on 400 is far superior to one on 500
Heads up I have been shooting Z7 and Z7II for quite some time and sold all my 2 D850's long ago
I accepted losing BIF capabilities so I could get jump on mirrorless - my marco lens and 500 PF are only f-mount lens I own.
I also have both z-mount TC's

So, I suspect the main bird setup for now will be 400mm with 1.4 TC so 560mm @f6.3 and after some comparison shooting, I suspect my 500 won't stay around long
Crop of Queen taken HH 1/800 sec with Z9 and 400mm f/4.5 and 1.4TC at f/6.3 Iso 450
