I thought the same thing until I realized that there aren't many things I would use an 800mm lens for at that distance or even closer!E.J. Peiker wrote:Looking at the specs, the only item that disappoints me a bit is the 16.4 feet minimum focus distance.
Would be nice if shorter distance but right in between 600FL and 800/5.6 so that's not bad!E.J. Peiker wrote:Looking at the specs, the only item that disappoints me a bit is the 16.4 feet minimum focus distance.
The Canon RF 800mm f/5.6 has a MFD of 8.5 feet…SantaFeJoe wrote:I thought the same thing until I realized that there aren't many things I would use an 800mm lens for at that distance or even closer!E.J. At only 3x the price.....never mind weight.....E.J. Not sure there's a correlation between MFD and priceSwissblad wrote:At only 3x the price.....never mind weight.....E.J. All that is missing is a mirrorless D500, a baby Z9! Please.....
Shorter and lighter with a built-in 1.25TC. But it costs about $1k more. To me, being able to focus close is always a good feature to have.neubigod wrote:hullyjr wrote:I'm definately sold on this lens for my type of bird photography. Olympus 150-400 close focusing is 51".
Nikon always seems to have had this problem. Not a winning long term strategy. I think it hurts them further with the performance of the other Z cameras.photoman4343 wrote:I just cannot get interested in any new Nikon Z lens no matter how good it might be as I still do not have a Z 9 body to use it on. Why should I buy or order anything more from a company that cannot fulfill camera orders placed five to six months ago? This may not be "fair" to this new lens, but it is a fair criticism of the company offering the lens for sale.
Interesting comparison between the Canon and Nikon lenses on Canon Rumours.Scott B wrote:I agree with E.J. on MFD I would use the closer focus distance often, but it appears to be an amazing lens for the price. I could convert from Canon to Nikon with most of my favorite lenses for the price difference between this lens and the recent Canon 800mm.
Now I understand where your earlier comment thinking the Canon looks like a 400 2.8 with a x2 extender bolted on.Swissblad wrote:Interesting comparison between the Canon and Nikon lenses on Canon Rumours.Scott B wrote:I agree with E.J. on MFD I would use the closer focus distance often, but it appears to be an amazing lens for the price.
