Well, I succumbed and bought an OM-1 - it's primarily a land camera for the foreseeable future. That is to say I'm not planning on taking it UW at this stage.

So how is it???  In no particular order

AF is a big step up it snapped to focus on subjects where the EM-1 II just hunted in low light
new high res EVF is excellent and layout of info is good- keeps out of way of image
ISO3200 is very usable.  The AI based noise reduction in OM Workspace does a nice job
Noise is subjectively better then EM-1 MkII
Bigger battery is nice with 25% more capacity
   Subject tracking works pretty well
The better in body stabilisation  is great.
Body is very solid in the hand feels very high quality - the sort of feel you had with the Canon 1D - 1Dx series cameras

Some samples

Common Bronzewing with 300mm f4/1.4x 1/80 @ f8 ISO800 handheld :  http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~chrisx2/i ... ewingL.jpg
The bronzewing was processed in Capture One Pro and PS, no noise reduction apart from standard applied in Capture One conversion.

Did have any subjects needing high ISO so in best traditions of DPreview of old I took a photo on my cat in low light indoors.

1/60 @ f8 300mm f4 ISO3200:  http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~chrisx2/i ... xxie_L.jpg

on this shot the OM-1/300mm f4 snapped to focus but the EM-1 just hunted and refused to focus.

And here is a 100% crop comparing Capture one Noise reduction (standard) and OM workspace AI based NR :

from image above:  http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~chrisx2/i ... ompare.jpg

To compare noise performance with EM-1 MkII, I took shots of a dry flower arrangement at ISO3200.
this is about 50% of frame: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~chrisx2/i ... SO3200.jpg

and is here is a EM-1 MkII/OM-1 comparison, 100% crops both capture one processed:  http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~chrisx2/i ... SO3200.jpg

Subjectively to me the noise on the OM-1 is better - more even without the clumpy noise from the EM-1 II, using OM workspace should improve it further.

All in all seems like a great camera, obviously not full frame but really suitable for my uses.

To me it's all about the AF. If it's as good as I've read, I likely will have it one day (still using my EM 1 Mk II). Then put it through my flying pigeon tests.

BTW, most of the camera (from all brands) reviews I've read I don't see people testing them with BIF shots. Is it really that difficult to shoot BIF that they can't find any reviewers who can do that?? With AF so good these days it's basically just point and shoot. No?

Thanks for the write-up Chris!

Oh, why your cat looks sad? :D

Thanks, no worries.  The cat's not sad, more like grumpy because I called him to look at the camera, but I wasn't supplying food!

I hope now that RRS don't take forever to offer an L plate for it!

An user's report on BIF shots.

I have to agree it EM-1 MkII is great for macro stacking, set it up then hit the button and it blasts off the exposures.  The higher frame rates can only make this better.

I got my olympus setup to take underwater - it does great for that big sensors really don't have the same advantages underwater for most uses as you are often primarily strobe lit and housing big sensors and wide angle lenses is significantly more expensive and the systems and much heavier and bulkier.  I don't know if I'll get a housing for the OM-1 if I get one yet - it would cost me $3500 or so for a new housing on top of the camera.
I used to run Olympus GT-6 for underwater, but recently switched to sealife cameras https://gritroutdoors.com/sealife/ - slight downgrade for half the price. I feel like OM-1 is a bit overpriced still, might get it later on when prices drop a bit, doesn't look that worth if you already have a decent setup.

It really depends on what you want to do with it.  I've been using it for focus stacking and it's a noticeable improvement over the EM-1 MkII.  The faster frame rate alone makes it worthwhile as the stack is done in less time - so less chance of wind interfering.  It's also easier to access the number of frames and differential - you just hold down the button you assigned as a shortcut to activate stacking.

The AF is also a significant improvement and the subject tracking comes in handy for birds.  The battery life is noticeably better than the EM-1 MkII as well - approaching what I could do with my old 1DMkIV DSLR.

On another note, RRS have just listed the L plate is available for pre-order.

Good point, I didn't think about focus stacking. Don't even mention battery life, it's been bane of my existance lately...
